Romans 8:16-17 ESV. “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”
We have to be confronted with a scripture like this one from Romans. In Christ there are so many benefits – obviously. We can read books and volumes about that. At the same time there are provisions to those benefits. This scripture points out that suffering is one of those provisions as the ESV words it.
What I am personally confronted with is how we are obsessed with comfort, convenience and safety. As reasonable and noble as those pursuits seems what is the downside to being obsessed with that? Well, we start to see certain emotions as results of being outside of the will of God. Frustration, dissatisfaction, disappointment, loss, offence, the list is long. Could it be that we experience these circumstances and emotions by God’s design. Is it possible that shying away from tough situations is also stepping back from our character being refined?
It is possible?
From this verse, I may still default to pursue comfort in many forms but I pray that I will be more mindful that when I m in a tough situation or if I experience what could be described as suffering that I am also moving closer to being a fellow heir with Christ Jesus.

Hi Dennis,13
Hope you are well.
Great word……. And a great reminder. I just finished Romans on 22 May. I went through it slowly and very intentionally. Such great insights and the Holy Spirit really did great spiritual surgery.
With us returning to Bulgaria and not having a home to go to, Peta-Ann and I really felt this tension. The tension of obedience, discomfort, heartbreak but yet Peace, Joy and Hope. As I went through this Romans 15:13 really ministered to me. Through everything ….. suffering and discomfort are some of the times when we seem to be closest to Jesus. We have both experienced great blessings when we have experienced success and comfort. But these are not places or seasons to dwell in. They are moments of rest and restoration for the next season of challenge.
It is also a great reminder that we are also heirs with Christ Jesus. We are children of The Most High God.
Thank you for sharing this word and bring some great encouragement.
Lots of Love to Wendz.
Many Blessings
Grant
